PPN registered groups in the Tralee Municipal District
Under the Local Government Reform Act 2014, each County Council, had to put in place a system of municipal districts based on electoral areas. Kerry County Council has five Municipal Districts. Tralee, Killarney, Listowel, Kenmare and Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne. The Local Authority Members (County Councillors) elected from these municipal districts take certain decisions in relation to the districts.

Its volunteers have been patrolling Banna Strand for over 34 years (founded 1983). The coverage area for our boat is from Brandon Head to Kerry Head including the Tralee Bay. The unit is operated by local volunteers who have undergone training under the auspices of the Irish Coastguard and Irish Water Safety. There are approximately 20 members in the unit comprising of both crew and a management committee. Banna Strand has always been one of the busiest beaches in the country, however there has been a noticeable surge in visitor numbers due to the association with the “Wild Atlantic Way” and being voted the best beach in Ireland (Social Media : TripAdivisor 2017). Banna Rescue has worked in close co-operation with other emergency response services, including The Irish Naval Service, Irish Coastguard, RNLI, CRBI, An Garda Síochána, National Ambulance Service, and Kerry Fire and Rescue Service |

It is an extremely challenging role that families take on to care for children on behalf of the State and each county is given the option to create a branch. In Kerry we have such a branch and we have the following supports offered: 1. Monthly coffee morning for foster carers to meet and support each other 2. Xmas gathering for foster families to meet and enjoy In Kerry we are lucky enough to have great support for family days out and TUSLA incurs the cost of these 3 or 4 times a year. We pay for coffee mornings and Xmas gatherings from our individual Kerry branch bank account held by IFCA head office and this is funded by donations. We currently have €334 in our account. Our coffee mornings are held in the Meadowlands and they very kindly provide us with the room for free so all we pay is approximately €55 per month to cover teas/coffees and scones. This may sound like a very small thing to have but to the people who attend these coffee mornings they are a lifeline offering experience, a shoulder to cry on, advice, support and love. The friendships formed provide ongoing support meaning that more than one family in Kerry continues to care for the children who need it the most. |

In light of the fact that Comhairle na nÓg is for young people under the age of 18 and who therefore have no other voting mechanism to have their voice heard, Comhairle na nÓg is designed to enable young people to have a voice on the services, policies and issues that affect them in their local area. Kerry Comhairle na nOg is a youth-led initiative that has around 60 members spread throughout the county. They meet in sub-committees in Killarney, Listowel, Tralee and Caherciveen as well as the large group meeting every two months in Tralee. Recent topics that the comhairle have taken on include mental health and drug and alcohol awareness. In terms of mental health the young people organised a mental health first aid training course for teachers and youth workers, and they also organised a colour run on Banna Beach to promote positive mental health. For their drugs and alcohol topic they designed and developed 'Hugs not Drugs' wristbands, ran information stands in their schools, helped launch an information booklet and made a DVD with signposting information to help services. This year the comhairle are working on the topics of sexual health and youth information. |

We have now separated the Support Centre from the SHED to allow each area of work to receive dedicated time and attention; a dedicated team of volunteers will be attached to each area of work. The Phoenix SHED is now a company limited by guarantee in its own right. We currently have about 65 members. A membership fee is payable, notably, €15 for 6 months or €25 for the year. The SHED is about social engagement, psychological and physical health, participation in activities, enjoyment and peer support. It is a place where women can feel relaxed, safe and welcome. It is a place where women can learn new skills, develop new interests, take part in activities, such as drumming, yoga, chakra dancing, line dancing, tai chi, qi gong, singing, physical exercises. Women can also attend talks on women’s health issues, such as nutrition, menopause, breast health, the benefits of meditation and mindfulness. There also talks on how to cope with loss and grief and how to write a Will. There are creative workshops such as pebble painting, making jewellery, designing and making greeting cards. Other events include walking, art and gardening. Digital photography and IT skills are also organised. Day trips are organised a couple of times a year. Importantly, women can just sit, drink tea, eat the cake and chocolates, have a heart to heart chat, meet someone new, engage in banter and have a laugh. Combating social isolation is a key objective. The committee regularly seek feedback from our SHED members and we endeavour to deliver on the ideas and suggestions put forward. One SHED member noted that it was important for women ‘to tell their story’; we currently have a project called ‘My Story’ which encourages women to write their story. Depending on the response we receive we may publish the stories. Phoenix Women's SHED Experience One message we give to all our SHED members, is that we would encourage them, never to feel they are not strong enough, fit enough, creative enough, young enough, slim enough, talented enough, intelligent enough, experienced enough… to do any of the activities that we organise. All activities can be done at one’s own pace and if women just want to sit it out and relax, that is no problem. We want all women to have positive experiences in the Phoenix Women’s SHED, to leave feeling destressed, confident, happy, empowered to take on challenges and overall develop a quality lifestyle. Conversely, if a woman has skills in a particular field, they could be the one leading a workshop. We have had someone from the Annascaul Ladies Shed demonstrating Floral Table Decorations. Another member delivered a First Aid session. We encourage women to share their skills or indeed tell their story. Outcomes From the SHED – What Do Women Gain by Being Part of The New Women’s Shed Movement? Women will meet new people, have an opportunity to connect and engage and participate in a range of activities as referred to above. Women can often feel isolated, lonely and disconnected from the community especially as their families grow up and leave home. Women at the SHED chat, laugh, enjoy the company, share their interests and problems. Tea, coffee and biscuits are in plentiful supply. We aim to foster opportunities that will enhance greater self confidence, more understanding of the benefits of physical exercise and healthy diet, knowledge and skills that will enable women to feel empowered to make decisions that affect them. We also aim to provide regular workshops that will enable women to improve their selfcare through relaxation and destressing techniques. We encourage an understanding of the importance of connecting with nature and creativity to improve mood and energy and enhance feelings of wellbeing. We remind ourselves about the importance of being light hearted, engaging with others and enjoying life. Overall, in regard to ‘Quality of Life’, we know the SHED does make a significant difference to a range of dimensions such as physical health and fitness, psychological health and well being and, through enjoyment, helping to create a positive outlook on life. |
