Castleisland- Corca Dhuibhne
Under the Local Government Reform Act 2014, each County Council, had to put in place a system of municipal districts based on electoral areas. Kerry County Council has five Municipal Districts. Tralee, Killarney, Listowel, Kenmare and Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne. The Local Authority Members (County Councillors) elected from these municipal districts take certain decisions in relation to the districts.

In the intervening time we have achieved this objective and surpassed expectations in most of the organised events which have taken place in the community centre. Our Newsletter published in August 2015 highlighted the many events which were organised and successfully completed during the group’s first year in existence. In order to comply with the terms of our long term lease agreement with Saint Brendan’s Trust we decided to register as a limited company which is now known as Tureencahill Community Group Limited from January 1st 2015. In keeping with the strong musical and writing culture of the area our group hosted a Musical Summer School in August 2016 with plans in place to host another in July 2017.The plan here would be to develop and add classes in coming years in areas such as Irish Speaking, History and Poetry etc. Our plans and objectives for this much loved and valued iconic building in our rural community is contingent on we sourcing adequate funding to help us put an administrator/ manager in place. The role would be vital in pulling all relevant stakeholders together to see our long term objective of daily activity in this centre. |

The group helped set up the Saoirse Advocacy service for people with Intellectual Disabilites, now run by the Citizens Information Board and employs a full time Advocate for County Kerry. Unfortunately, this person works with individuals and we would like to get support as a group to develop group advocacy. The group had been facilitated by Deborah Birmingham, a wonderful advocate, but, Deborah has moved onto other projects. During her time with the group the following has been achieved:- Campaigned successfully for a path to be repaired and made accessible from An Riocht Health and Leisure Centre to Castleisland Town, We went on 0ne protest march in 2009 against welfare cuts, We campaigned successfully for three years to get an accessible footpath with lights from Glebe Lodge to Castleisland town, Organised and hosted a Bereavement and Loss information session in Nov 2010 and got an article in frontline magazine for people with intellectual disabilities amongst other things. All the financial documentation is available (receipts etc. ) The club has been running since 1990, was closed briefly during the lockdown and is now being facilitated by Michael Ó Cinnéide, a local primary school teacher, since Pádraig de Casenove has semi-retired from teaching.
