Kenmare Heritage

Our group ‘Kenmare Heritage’ was formed at a public meeting in The Carnegie Arts Centre in Kenmare on May 16, 2023. As a local voluntary group we feel it is important it is important that Kenmare Heritage be part of Kerry PPN. • The main objective of the group is to secure suitable premises to house and preserve the lace making legacy left by Sisters of St. Clare who have just left Kenmare. And also the lace legacy which will be left behind when Nora Finnegan retires from and closes The Kenmare Lace and Design Centre, which she hopes to do in the near future. • The group also hope to collect and compile recorded items, historic artifacts and writings of local historical interest and to preserve and deposit the articles in this premises for use at the premises by local people and other interested parties. • To promote the heritage of the local area in its broadest sense and to provide a welcoming environment for all those interested in local heritage. We are in the process of registering as a CLG. The first action undertaken by the group was to run several events during Heritage week of August 2023. These included Lacemaking demonstrations and talks on the history of Kenmare Lace, Lace making workshops, Public opening and display of artifacts in St Patrick’s Church and Historical walking tours of Kenmare. We hope to make an important contribution to the Heritage of Kenmare.
