Daniel O Connell Summer School | Derrynane Beg Caherdaniel Co. Kerry v23xp83 | The Daniel O Connell Summer School - Our Vision Our Plans from 2013…. To O’Connell was the found...r of Irish popular politics and a pioneering humanitarian whose influence was felt at home and abroad. In Western Europe, he was celebrated as a man who pioneered a new styles of “people power” and through it, helped to bring stability to a Europe that had been ravaged by years of war. In Great Britain, especially when he held the balance of power during the 1830s, he helped to pioneer all sorts of reforms while in the United States, he is still remembered as one of the great leaders of the movement to end slavery. In Ireland, O’Connell is the man who is remembered as the person who successfully led the campaign for Catholic Emancipation which enabled Catholics to sit in Parliament. O’Connell was able to use this achievement to create “an Irish Party” in Westminster which for the first time, was able to act in a more focused way to address the grievances of Ireland. He is also remembered as a great lawyer – “The “Counsellor” of Irish folklore – the man who led the campaign to give full civil rights to Jews as well as one of the pioneers of the first movement for full civil rights in Britain and Ireland. This is the person whom the Daniel O’Connell School celebrates. This is the man who in his own time, was a highly political thinker, the founder of Irish the modern political system, and the man who is still remembered in various parts of the globe. And he was born in Cahirsiveen and resided in Derrynane until he died in 1845. Both in his own time and since then, O’Connell was a complicated man, as man who was seen in different ways, sometimes for the better, sometimes less so. However, nobody can doubt his importance. Moreover, he remains as a figure of continuing national and international relevance, a figure whose career and legacy can lend itself to all sorts of debates and discussions which are still relevant to both the Ireland and the wider world.

Killorglin & District Pipe Band | 6 Laune View Killorglin Co. Kerry V93 EF68 | Killorglin has a proud pipe band tradition stretching back to 1945. Formed in the same year that Wor...d War 2 ended, the Laune Pipe Band gave the communities of the Mid-Kerry region a positive focus when times were tough. The band became a source of pride for the people of Killorglin, and old photographs from this era bear witness to the crowds that turned out to cheer the band whenever they paraded through the streets. The band thrived in the fifties but by 1965 it had lost so many members to immigration that it had to disband. In 2010 a group of individuals came together in an attempt to re-establish the band. It was immediately apparent that the people of Killorglin and Mid-Kerry were very supportive of the idea. A committee was formed and under the able chairmanship of Pat Pigott, Killorglin and District Pipe Band was founded, and the rest as they say, is history. Finding a teacher to give tuition in piping to willing participants who had no previous experience was the first step. Gerard Baynham (Castlemaine) was approached and asked if he would take on this onerous task. A gifted piper himself, Ger willingly came on board as Pipe Major and teacher, and the enthusiasm which he brought to the project was infectious. Classes commenced on November 10th 2010 and the band was up and running. From humble beginnings ( 6 pipers and 3 drummers" all novices) the band has grown steadily and today we stand at 10 pipers and 10 drummers. The Killorglin & District Pipe Band very first public engagement was at the launch of The Railway Monument on Iveragh Road on 5th August 2011. Less than a week later the band led the Puck Fair 2011 Opening Parade, and the pride that the people of Killorglin felt on that day as they saw their band coming over the bridge was palpable. Today the band performs about forty times a year at various events throughout the county, from Caherciveen to Ballyheigue and from Castlegregory to Ballybunion as well as Puck Fair, The Rose of Tralee Festival, County Hurling and Football Finals and Colleges Finals in Munster. Killorglin and District Pipe Band has become an integral part of the cultural life of The Kingdom. The band also competes in a number of Pipe Band Association competitions each year - a huge achievement for a band so young. Ranging in age from 12 to 70 the band continues to go from strength to strength...
